Boxing Day trading changes

November 11, 2015

retail

Retail industry update

Shoppers will be able to take full advantage of Boxing Day sales with legislation being passed overnight allowing all retail stores across New South Wales the right to trade on Boxing Day.

Previously, under the Retail Trading Act (NSW), Boxing Day was a restricted trading day which meant only exempt stores or stores within the CBD or Sydney Trading Precinct were allowed to trade on that day. This change will allow retail stores who would like to trade on Boxing Day, who were previously required to remain closed, to take advantage of this lucrative day of consumer spending.

Employers in the retail sector should note Public Holiday penalty rates are payable for all hours worked on Boxing Day. If you decide to trade remember to keep in mind that the usual Public Holiday rights will apply to employees, including the right for an employee to be absent from work on a Public Holiday.

For more information regarding Public Holidays please contact your HR Assured advisor.  Interested to find out more about becoming a client? Contact us today.
