Fair Work Ombudsman spot checks

Businesses in Brisbane are the target of the latest spot checks by the Fair Work Ombudsman and ASIC in the latest auditing campaign.

Businesses in the Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley, South Brisbane and West End areas will be receiving visits from FWO who will be checking employers in those areas are paying correct wages, penalty rates, loadings, allowances and providing appropriate meal breaks. The businesses are predominantly in the retail, hospitality, fast food and real estate industries.

While businesses to be targeted have been randomly selected, most that were selected have first time company directors, with the intention of ensuring that those directors understand their obligations and ‘develop good compliance from an early stage.’

Fair Work Ombudsman, Natalie James says ‘[Fair Work] Inspectors will offer tailored assistance to rectify any non-compliance issues and put processes in place to ensure employers get things right in the future.’

The Fair Work Ombudsman runs targeted campaigns throughout the course of the year. There are no specific patterns as to where they will target next, so now is the time to ensure you are compliant.
